HOW CAN I GIVE UP ON YOU? Says the Lord, O Backslider!
When I was a little girl, Mum would always tell me “Never stay out late. It isn’t safe!” “Yes Ma!” I’d reply.
Then, one day my friend asked me to accompany her to escort her friend home. Initially I didn’t want to, because I was afraid that we would return home late, but later I obliged. Little did I know that this friend’s home was really far. And then, 2 hours after sunset, we were now getting back. Gripped with fear, I wondered how I’d get home. “Mum should be so bored now!” Then from nowhere a neighbor startled me just as I was almost getting to our house.
“Hey! Where have you been? They’ve combed the whole neighborhood just looking for you! Today you’re dead! You’ll see what your parents will do to you!” I started to cry. So I got to our gate, and I couldn’t enter. I was so afraid. It was getting dark but I just stayed behind the gate, afraid to enter.
And that’s a similar thing most of us as believers are facing today! Jesus gives the analogy of the Good Shepherd in John 10. Many of us have been led into the pen by the Good Shepherd. But many at times, in yielding to the desires of the flesh and sin, we move out against his command. We hear the voice of the Spirit of the Good Shepherd admonishing us not to pay attention to the world’s call. Yet, we don’t heed to Him… BACKSLIDING…
O many of us as believers have backslidden before! And many of us are still backsliding. The dreadful thing however is that many backsliders want to come back home, but are just afraid. And so many are just still standing outside the gate where darkness looms, and are crying and are feeling guilty. Many are afraid to go to the Gate to enter once again. “I’m afraid!” “I’ve fallen several times!” “God is angry with me!” “I’ve been rebellious and I don’t deserve God’s love!” “Something tells me if I even go to God in prayer he will strike me dead like in the days of old!”
But it’s getting late, Son! It’s getting dark, Daughter! And if you don’t enter through the gate to go home once again, darkness may be willing to give you solace under some tree where the Ancient Serpent may be lurking.
It’s a big lie to think that God hates you when you backslide! It’s a big lie to think that as a believer the Holy Spirit leaves you when you backslide! At times you say “But I’m always falling!” “I’m always yielding to besetting sins!” “I’m sure God has given up on me!” But o! Hear the WORD of the Lord to the backslider today! He says:
“BUT HOW CAN I GIVE UP ON YOU?
HOW CAN I LET YOU GO?
HOW CAN I LEAVE YOU TO BE RUINED?
I CAN’T BEAR TO EVEN THINK SUCH THOUGHTS!” HOSEA 11:8
God says that He can’t bear to even think such thoughts of giving up on you! No! Never!
So don’t be deceived! Don’t let the enemy stop you from coming back to God. He’s ever ready to receive you. FOR HE CAN’T BEAR TO EVEN THINK OF GIVING UP ON YOU!
“Let us fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God’s unmerited favor to us sinners), that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need.” HEBREWS 4:16 AMP.
